Babywearing Field Day

Our first ever Babywearing Field Day was a huge success!  Field Day had been in the works for months, and on July 21st many families and their kiddos came out to South Kitsap Regional Park to play babywearing-themed games, try on carriers, learn more about babywearing, and enter a raffle for some awesome prizes!

The Washington weather gods smiled upon us and we had a ton of sunshine as people competed in a woven wrap tug-of-war (don’t try this at home!), family babywearing sponge race, a mommy carry-a-thon competition (who could complete the most carries in a set time?) and a daddy babywearing obstacle course!  The kiddos who participated had fun choosing prizes from the grab bags, and we gave prizes away to the grown-ups, too!  Our fastest obstacle course dad won a Starbucks gift card and the mommy who won the carry-a-thon, Jana King, won a free year-long membership to Kitsap Babywearers!

We opened up our lending library that day, and began collecting membership forms and dues.  Kitsap Babywearers was official!

So many generous benefactors donated to our raffle that day, including: Simply Sweet Cloth Diapers, Henna by Brandy, Earthbound Family, and King Konversions.  We made almost $300!

That money immediately went toward growing our lending library.  We were able to purchase Babyhawk and Kozy mei tais, as well as three woven wraps!  We now have two Didymos Ninos in a 5 and a 6, as well as a size 2 Storchenweige Albert.

Everyone had a great time, and Kitsap Babywearers’ leaders felt that all their hard work was really worth it.  They look forward to next year’s event being bigger and better, and are currently planning some other sure-to-be-amazing fundraisers for the near future!  Stay tuned!  :)

Membership and Lending Library
We are excited to announce that we have membership available for Kitsap Babywearers starting this month! What’s membership for you ask? Membership gets you access to our new lending library. You can check out carriers from our lending library to actually take home and wear with your little one for the month to try out. Also, as a member, you will be invited to private wrap parties where you can come practice your wrapping skills in a small group setting, and get more personalized, one-on-one assistance. Memberships will be $30 (plus any applicable Paypal fees) for a family for a year. Forms for membership and the lending library agreement will be available in our Facebook group, and on our blog before our next monthly meeting. We recommend you print out, read through, and sign these forms to bring to the meeting. Membership fees will be paid via Paypal.
Some of the carriers we already have available in our lending library include several Sakura Bloom ring slings, a Boba, Moby wrap, an ActiveBaby water ring sling, and some Infantino mei tais. We have a Tula coming our way this fall, among other carriers, and hopefully we’ll be able to make several wrap purchases following Field Day!

Baby wearing survey

Did you know that the average baby wearer is 31?  I, and many others, recently partook in an on-line survey regarding baby wearing.  The results were quite astounding.  Bill Robertson was so kind to allow me to post the results to share.

http://goo.gl/8WuM0  CLICK THIS LINK FOR MORE SPECIFIC DETAILS.
With 1,482 people participating, the response to this survey was fantastic!
Among other interesting findings, the average babywearer is 31 years old and has 2 children and 7 carriers. In particular, I found the difficulties that babywearers face to be very interesting:
  • Stage 1. Discovering babywearing
    • The number of babywearing options can be overwhelming.
    • Finding knowledgeable resources, particularly in-person support.
    • There is contradicting information, misconceptions, and misinformation.
  • Stage 2. Finding a desirable baby carrier
    • Initially, most only know about carriers offered by large retailers.
    • Finding a suitable carrier once more options are known (i.e., ideal for body type, lifestyle, infant size, and price range).
    • Babywearing terminology and acronyms can be intimidating.
    • High prices and the lack of a trial period inhibit some purchases.
  • Stage 3. Learning how to use a purchased baby carrier
    • Gaining confidence that you are wearing your baby correctly.
    • Ensuring that your baby is safe, particularly for newborns (e.g., fear of dropping, asphyxiation, poor spine/hip alignment).
    • Acclimating the baby to being worn.
    • Learning different carries, especially back carries.
    • Enduring muscle fatigue and back pain.
  • Ongoing: Criticism and pressure from friends, family, and observers.
I hope you enjoyed this information.
